Equipment available
for projects include:
- Programmable 1700ºC furnaces with chamber sizes of 16" x
16" x 18" and 6" x 6" x 6".
- Various capacity 1100ºC furnaces with programmable controllers.
- Environmental chamber with programmable humidity and temperature
control over a range of 20 to 90%RH, 0 to 200ºF, and a chamber size of 24" x
24" x 24".
- Dryers including a mechanical convection dryer capable of 300ºC.
- Mixers and blenders including an attrition mill, a V-blender with
liquid addition capabilities, jar mills, impeller, shaker and planetary mixers.
- Forming equipment for dry pressing, extrusion and tape casting.
- Slip and slurry preparation equipment including viscosity and pH
measurement.
- Metallographic preparation equipment for hard materials with
diamond grinding, lapping and sawing.
- Equipment associated with a basic wet chemistry laboratory.
- Machine shop equipment to fabricate molds in metal, plastic, wood
or plaster; and to prototype fixtures or mechanisms.
With this equipment, novel or custom formulated materials can be processed into slips for
monolithic casting or coatings, plastic bodies for extrusion or injection, or granulated
powders ready for pressing. These prepared materials may then be formed into either test
specimens or functional prototype parts ready for trial and evaluation. Using small
production or laboratory size versions of production equipment allows easy scale-up to a
commercial process. Control of laboratory process variables by programmable
microprocessors assures reproducibility and the capture of critical process information.
